In NB did you know we have an association? It’s the CANB... Cosmetology Association of NB.
This is in place to protect all trained, licensed professionals and clients. How do you know if someone is legally providing you a service? Any licensed professional in NB must have a license, it must be printed and on display for all to see upon entering their space. If your going into a salon they must have their individual license this is for hair, lashes, makeup & aesthetics. If someone operates out of their home they must also have a salon permit & an individual license. There are also mobile licenses these licenses are for individuals to come to your home and provide services, this is not for them to operate out of their own home in a non-compliant space. If someone has a salon permit and does mobile they must hold an individual license, salon permit and mobile permit. How does someone become certified? It’s easy, most states and a few provinces do not govern the beauty industry :( which means sign in online give them your money and take an online course or in person course HOWEVER, this is a waste of your money because you can’t legally work in this industry in our province without attending a licensed school. What is licensed? Licenses are obtained by attending a licensed, registered educational facility in the province, completing the program, graduating and passing a board exam then you become licensed and pay yearly dues to keep your license and work. Are makeup artist permitted to do lash lift, tints & extensions? No, the must also have a license and certification for lashes the licensed for lash services is an LT license. Are all aestheticians trained & licensed in lashes? Again no, although aestheticians do not require both an aesthetician license and lash tech license, in order to legally and for liability reasons to offer lashes they must have a certification from a credible brand/course in order to offer them. As a client what is your right...? You can ask to see licenses, they cannot refuse to provide you a license, in fact if it’s not on display that’s a violation of a bylaw. If in home they must have an entrance way blocked off from the home for client access only, there must also be a client only washroom and a hand washing sink for the salon. You also have the right to contact the CANB and report anyone operating that is not licensed, operating out of home without a permit, or any concerns that you think may be a violation. They keep this information anonymous and it helps keep our clients safe.
